I just returned from spending time down in New Orleans. While I am a not from New Orleans, like many others, I was there just after Hurricane Katrina hit, as well as times before that, and in some ways it did feel a bit odd being back.
When I was there in 2005 the city was a drowning ghost town with four inches of mud coating the areas where the water had receeded. Minus the mud, some areas still look like that. Other areas look like thriving neighborhoods and still others are in the midst of being rebuilt.
Also rebuilding is the New Orleans Police Department. Even now, close to three years after the storm, the police force is still augmented by Soldiers and Airmen from throughout the state. WIth the servicemembers tours assisting the NOPD set to end in December, that was primarily what I was there photographing.
